Course Description

CI2000 provides foundational computer literacy skills essential for allied healthcare careers. Through scenario-based activities set in a healthcare workplace, students develop proficiency with the Windows operating system, Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), internet research, professional communication, and introductory database concepts. All coursework is contextualized for healthcare settings, preparing students to use technology confidently and responsibly in clinical and administrative roles.

Course Policies

Participation & Attendance

This is an asynchronous online course. While there are no scheduled meeting times, active participation is required every week. Students are expected to log into D2L regularly, complete all assignments by their due dates, and engage meaningfully in discussion forums. Consistent participation is critical to success in a 5-week accelerated format.

Discussion Forum Requirements

  • Initial post due by Wednesday at 11:59 PM ET each week.
  • Two peer replies due by Sunday at 11:59 PM ET each week.
  • Posts must be substantive (minimum 100 words for initial posts, 50 words for replies) and demonstrate critical thinking about the topic.
  • Use professional language and respectful tone in all forum communications.

Assignment Submissions

  • All assignments must be submitted through D2L Brightspace using the designated dropbox.
  • Use the required file format as specified in each assignment (typically .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, or .pdf).
  • Follow the CI2000 naming convention: LastName_Week#_Assignment.docx
  • Late submissions may receive a point deduction per UMA’s late work policy. Contact your instructor before the deadline if you anticipate a delay.

Technology Requirements

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11 desktop or laptop computer (required)
  • Microsoft Office 365 (provided free to all UMA students)
  • Reliable broadband internet connection
  • Current web browser (Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Firefox)
  • D2L Brightspace access

iPads, Chromebooks, and Mac computers are not supported for this course. The required desktop versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are not available on these platforms. See the Software & Device Readiness page for device support options.
